Amber Zone Contest – 2015

Welcome to The Amber Zone Contest – 2015!

We have a lot of prizes. Have a look at the sponsor pages. All participants will get something. A big THANKS to our Sponsors. Amber Zone will also add $50 (at DriveThruRPG) for all participants to share.

The style of the entries should be in the style of the Amber Zones in the old JTAS. (First Players’ Information. Then Referee’s Information without any D6 options.)

The contest starts now and ends 31 October 2015. Write as many entries as You like.

After the 31:st of October 2015, all entries will be posted at the Amber Zone. The winner will be chosen by the Jury.

The Members of the Jury are BeRKA, Dylan, Mike, and Eric.

By entering the contest You allow your entry to be posted at the Amber Zone. All entries might also be posted in PDF format as a free down-loadable file at the Amber Zone.

All entrants will be given credit for their work and will retain the copyright on their entries.

Amber Zone Opening Contest

Some general guidelines:

1, Each entry should be less than 2000 words.

2, One image may be used in each entry. You must either own the rights to the image, or it must be used under some sort of free license. Wikimedia Commons or Pixabay are good places to find an image that You can use. Please provide information about the image. (Is it Yours? If not, where have You found it? What license is used?) Note: You don’t need to use an image. You can also generate an image using the Pulp-o-Mizer or similar services.

3, Please don’t force the PCs to sign up for (what they think are) illegal activities. It is better if they find that out later, or in some way are forced to take illegal action… Library Bob at Ancient Faith explains it better.  😈

4, Please be a bit vague about the planet and types of star ships and weapons, so your adventure can be useful for many ATUs. (Unless there is a good reason for not being vague about these things.)

5, Please use a spell checker!

6, This years theme is Big Damn Heroes.

Send Your entries by e-mail. Please use plain text format and attach (or link to) the image, if You select to use one. Word files will not be accepted! Send your entries to: Mail to Amber

IMPORTANT: Everyone that sends me an entry will get a reply. If you have sent me something and didn’t get a reply within a few days, then contact me again.

Please include a preferred nickname (that may be your real name) to show on the Amber Zone.

Please include your e-mail address (that you use on DriveThruRPG). If you are not yet using DriveThruRPG, then any of your e-mail addresses will work fine. Please also tell us if there is any Prize that you for some reason doesn’t need. (Maybe you already have it.)

The Gas Giant

Everyone is a winner. If you didn’t enter the Amber Zone Opening contest, you still got 11 new Amber Zones to enjoy. Those who did enter will also win prizes from the sponsors.

All contestants will also get a goody bag with a $10 gift certificate at DriveThruRPG and a PDF copy of Technical Manual 1: Reprieve-class Escape Pod from DSLIronworks.

The winner and the Top Three has already been presented. Below is a list of what the other entries will win.

“An Amber Zone adventure on an amber zone world. A classic rescue that forces the players onto the streets. It even comes with a floor plan for the final battle.” Mike

For the entry Kellan’s Heroes, Eric Bergmueller will get  Prize Pack 2 from Spica Publishing.

“Classic story translated for the OTU. Great idea.” Dylan

For the entry Papa Tango One-Niner, Eric Bergmueller will get the  Wracky Prize from Greylock Publishing Lines.

Based on PT 109. But this story is a bit better. “BeRKA”

For the entry Courier Down, Traveller John will get Prize Pack 1 from Spica Publishing.

A bit like Johnny Mnemonic but from the other side and complicated with Zhodani attacks. “BeRKA”

For the entry A Walk Through the Valley, Library Bob will get Prize Pack 3 from Gypsy Knights Games.

The detail was good and I liked the fleshed out forces. The idea is to give the referee a lot of tools – mission accomplished. “Dylan”

For the entry Undeniable, Jonathan Crocker will get Prize Pack 2 from Gypsy Knights Games.

“This is a nice setup.” Mike

For the entry Littul Kittons, Drifter will get the Circus Prize from Greylock Publishing Lines.

“I liked it and it reminded me of the Legend of the Sky Raiders by Andrew Keith” Dylan

For the entry Honeymoon Cruise, Jonathan Crocker will get Prize Pack 3 from Spica Publishing.

“Some of the games that my players have told me were the most fun over the years were the ones that had no gun-play.” Dylan

The Mansion

The top three

The top three in the Amber Zone Opening Contest are:

  1. The Spaces Between by Friz
  2. A Hostile Takeover by Library Bob
  3. Unit 10 from N…  by Eric Bergmueller

We have already presented the winner.

For the second place, Library Bob will get Prize Pack 1: the Shipyard Package from DSL Ironworks.

Some comments from the Jury:

“For a one nighter this would be a fantastic beer and chips adventure to run.” Dylan

“A classic dungeon crawl. A well-done one, too.” Mike

“It remind me of Research Station Gamma with all the robots.” BeRKA

For the third place Eric Bergmueller will get Bastards of Foreven Starter Bundle from DSL Ironworks.

Some comments from the Jury:

“Great mercenary adventure here which takes advantage of one of the greatest strengths of the OTU – anything can be wedged into the milieu and be made to work.” Dylan

“In fact, I would say that the only reason the rebels haven’t already won is because they are obviously idiots.” Mike

The winner is

With the last post I hoped that someone would guess or speculate about who the winner was. The voting at CotI also got the wrong winner.

The Jury voted and the worthy winner is Friz with his entry The Spaces Between. For this Friz will receive Prize Pack 1, The Colonies from our sponsor Gypsy Knights Games.

Some comments from the Jury:

“Friz has written a scary rescue mission in a dangerous asteroid. There is a lot going on. The whole idea is innovative and I like it.” BeRKA

“I have found “Hostile Takeover” and “Spaces Between” the most enjoyable.” Anders

“A good setup and tension and a time limit. Plus, the chance to find an unrelated goodie.” Mike

“Fantastic idea here. In my opinion there aren’t enough of the players-against-the-environment stories.” Dylan
