AMBER ZONE: Dr Aardmore I Presume

War is Hell, but murder is still murder

Location: Ralhe (Spinward Marches/Five Sisters 0731) E-424574-8 Ni

Ralhe is a small world with little to recommend it except some surface mineral deposits. The very thin, tainted atmosphere requires respirator/filter masks, and most of the ground is covered in permafrost. It is not on a trade route or X-boat route, but it gets enough visitors to maintain the economy of its three competing states: Rahlhiem, Torrijo, and Klinghoff.

The three nations share a common culture, but not philosophies of government. Rahlheim is a bureaucratic socialist state, Torrijo is a republic, and Klinghoff is a monarchy. Within the last decade the three nations have conducted a slow-burning brush war consisting of raids and incursions with few pitched battles. Small unit actions have been common, with the occasional airstrike, barrage or armored vehicle clash.

Lady Estella Aardmore is the wife of a humanitarian doctor. They are lesser nobility of nearby Iderati (SM/Five Sisters 0732) The focus of the mission is her husband, Doctor Sir Hiram Aardmore, MD, Physician, musician, millionaire, philanthropist.

Dr. Aardmore is on Ralhe, in the war zone between Torrijo and Rahlheim, directing a free clinic for civilians who have been injured and/or displaced by the ongoing war. Back home on Iderati, however, he has made political enemies who would be glad to see him suffer an accident. The referee can make up details of the political dispute, but they are not critical to the mission. Lady Estella has learned that there is a hit squad after her husband. The PCs must race the clock to reach Dr. Aardmore before the hit squad does, then protect him from the attack.

Lady Estella offers Cr 75,000 to the party, payable once her husband is present with her on Iderati, still alive. She also provides middle passages (round trip) for the PCs and a High Passage for her husband. Local transport will be for the PCs to arrange. Shipping a vehicle to Rahle will be at their expense.

The contest starts now and ends 31 August 2019. Write as many entries as You like.

After the 31:st of August 2019, all entries will be posted at the Amber Zone. The winner will be chosen by the Jury.

Amber Zone Opening Contest

This years first prize is a $101 Gift Certificate at DriveThruRPG.
Second prize is a $60 Gift Certificate at DriveThruRPG.
Third prize is a $40 Gift Certificate at DriveThruRPG.

There will also be a few smaller prizes.

If you win you can buy lots of Traveller goodies that you might have missed.

Jury and Sponsors:

There will be no jury this year. I will ask a few friends to help me review the entries.

There will be no sponsors this year.

Some general guidelines:

1, Each entry should be less than 2000 words.

2, One image may be used in each entry. You must either own the rights to the image, or it must be used under some sort of free license. Wikimedia Commons or Pixabay are good places to find an image that You can use. Please provide information about the image. (Is it Yours? If not, where have You found it? What license is used?) Note: You don’t need to use an image. You can also generate an image using the Pulp-o-Mizer or similar services.

3, Please don’t force the PCs to sign up for (what they think are) illegal activities. It is better if they find that out later, or in some way are forced to take illegal action… Library Bob at Ancient Faith explains it better. 😈

4, Please be a bit vague about the planet and types of star ships and weapons, so your adventure can be useful for many ATUs. (Unless there is a good reason for not being vague about these things.)

5, Please use a spell checker!

6, This years theme is War. (This could be anything from a small local war on a balkanized planet to the Fifth Frontier War.) The PCs don’t have to be directly involved in the war. The war could be a background story.

Send Your entries by e-mail. Please use plain text format and attach (or link to) the image, if You select to use one. Word files will not be accepted! Send your entries to: Mail to Amber

IMPORTANT: Everyone that sends me an entry will get a reply. If you have sent me something and didn’t get a reply within a few days, then contact me again.

Please include a preferred nickname (that may be your real name) to show on the Amber Zone.

Please include your e-mail address (that you use on DriveThruRPG). If you are not yet using DriveThruRPG, then any of your e-mail addresses will work fine.

The winner is (2015)

The Jury voted and the worthy winner is Friz (again) with his entry Judge Me Worthy. Friz has selected the Type A2L Prize, Ship Book: A2L Far Trader from our sponsor Moon Toad Publishing.

Some comments from the Jury:

“What a fantastic caper; this starts out as a comedic romp and ends up in a brilliant plot twist leading to some dire circumstances for the players. This Amber Zone could be a spring-board to an entire campaign. Bonus points for adhering to the contest rules! I do judge this worthy!” Dylan

“I think this is an interesting situation with some opportunities for heroics. I like that this start up as a non-threatening almost comic situation
that then turns quite serious.” BeRKA

“The scary ticket combined with the ending twist makes this a roller coaster of a adventure.” Eric

“I like it. Simple, direct, and to the point. No extraneous fluff. Just a direct setup and straight forward follow through.” Mike
